Spring Cleaning

Spring cleaning?! That’s right, once the snow and the brain fog clears, our garages, basements, and attics start screaming for help. Here are some tips to tackle the clutter in common household areas:

1.) Choose one area a day, or even a partial area, to work on to begin your spring cleaning. It’s easy to think you will get that area done and then some, but organizing takes much longer than most people realize.

2.) Set goals for that area. Do you want to have more room to move around? Are things too mixed up and hard to find? Do you want to beautify the space? This will help you to know which items you might need to purchase to help create your vision.

3.) Basic organizing tenets include: sort, purge, and rearrange. If you are cleaning out a large area like a basement or garage, have a plan to donate or dispose of large items like furniture, as well as hazardous items like paint and electronics. The environment will thank you!

4.) Don’t forget to re-purpose. An old toilet makes a lovely and whimsical planter. Shelves, desks, baskets, and cylindrical items make great storage! Don’t forget your bluetooth label maker, you can find them online as low as $10!

5.) Clean as you go! Areas like garages, basements, and attics can get dusty and grimy. Before redistributing items to make them more organized and accessible, dust, clean, spray, and scrub storage items. You will feel like a million bucks and your spaces will absolutely shine!

6.) As always, OCD is here if you need assistance with your organizing goals. It is normal to feel overwhelmed and need some guidance, especially with big organizing jobs. Feel free to call, text, or email us today!

My kids have so much stuff!

My kids have so much stuff! Do you find yourself thinking this daily? When kids come into the picture, whatever their ages, they come with huge amounts of stuff. While most of it we need, birthdays and holidays can lead to an overflowing pile that makes storage spaces packed and every day living a challenge. How can we create a streamlined household? Here are some tips!

  1. Purge:
  2. Kids with trouble purging:
    • Next, do it when they’re not home. But, instead of getting rid of the items right away, hide them for a few months. If they don’t notice their absence after that, they will probably not notice when they are gone permanently.
  3. Sort:
    • Then, sort everything Into sentimental items, useful items, donate, recycle/trash. Then sort these by item type.
  4. Proximity:
    • To continue, your kids should be able to reach items they use a lot. This is one of the most important aspects of organizing! Store items that are not used often.
  5. Measure:
    • Next, measure your spaces and ensure you have enough bins, drawers, and containers. Map out where you would like the items to go. Don’t be afraid to get rid of items that no longer fit the theme you are going for. If you don’t have one, create one. Choose items in the look you are going for that match each other for an elegant, streamlined look.
  6. Label:
    • Lastly, items must be clearly labeled to avoid getting jumbled together again. Inexpensive blue tooth label makers with labels can be found online!

New Year, New You!

New Year, New you! We say this so often it becomes a joke at the gym. “Here come the New Year new you people.” Happy New Year! You probably have so much…STUFF at your house. Christmas stuff, container stuff, wrapping stuff, not to mention gifts for yourself, spouse, and/or kids you have to somehow find space for. Organizing a home can be daunting, especially this time of year, but here are some tried-and-true methods to start the new year off right!

  1. Make a list. It gets the craziness out of your head and onto paper. Don’t even bother putting it in order, just free write what needs to be done.
  2. Prioritize the list. Put what needs to be done first.
  3. You can also sort your list, if you’re a procrastinator like me, by how long items take. If you can knock out three ten minute items, you’ll feel accomplished and be more motivated to tackle items that take longer.
  4. As always, purging unnecessary clutter by donating, recycling, or trashing unneeded items will streamline your tasks and put the focus on organizing the important things.
  5. As you purge, sort items into sentimental items, useful items, donate, trash/recycle.
  6. Find fun containers to sort items into and label them. Dollar stores are a boon for beautiful and accessible storage options! Bluetooth label makers can be found online for a song with everything you need!
